I am predominantly a pastel artist who uses soft pastels to create layers of glowing, rich color in my work similar to the look of oil paintings. I first started using pastels in the preliminary sketches for my oil paintings. But then the satisfaction, efficiency and immediacy of using pastels on paper quickly took over and appealed to me more than oil on canvas. I use a blending technique with my fingers and smooth out my marks onto rough (cold press) watercolor paper. I focus on recreating landscapes and architectural scenes of Italy mostly because I have always been drawn to the unique color palette and the patina of weathered surfaces I discovered there. I was always intrigued by crumbling stone and aging plaster surfaces as such a beautiful, natural backdrop in daily Italian life. Although I was born in the U.S., my father was Italian and I was raised in a bilingual household full of Italian traditions. I had many opportunities to visit Italy and was influenced by the culture at an early age while visiting relatives and spending time abroad. I realize it is a crucial part of me and feel a constant longing for the place and its visual richness when I am not there
